The IOA at The World Show

With another World Show over - Congratulations to this years gold medal winner Brian Hogg for his Lancashire Plain head Canary  93pts.
Many other British exhibitors were very close to medals - Frank Carter gained 90 points with his Java Sparrows, Bernard Howlett 89 points with a song thrush, Alan Robinson 90 and 89 points with Cinnamon Greenfinches, David Shelbourne 91 and 90 points with Fifes, Willie McKay, one of our previous medallists 91 and 90 points with Fifes, Brian Hogg 90 points with a Lancashire Coppy, Richard Lumley 89 points with Glosters, Robert Watson 90 points with Fifes, Colin Patterson 90 and 89 points with Greenfinches, Diana Tammam, 89 points with Fiorinos, George Spurs, 89 points with Glosters, Derek Johnston 88 points with Glosters, Ron Evans, 86 points with Rollers, and S Tammam,  89 and 90 points with Borders and Fiorinos, many thanks also to Phillip Tonkin, David Allen, Barry Murphy and Sean Fitzpatrick for participating with their birds. In all we entered 117 birds and 30 of them gained 89 points and above, which made them very close to medals, I feel this is a great achievement. I am confident that we will bring home lots of medals in the future.

The highlight of the show for us and for COM Ireland was of course the acceptance of the Irish fancy Canary. This was the 7th year of trials and 3rd positive one which makes it the , 29th breed of canaries recognised by the COM. The Harlequin canary presented by Portugal failed to make the necessary points.
The numbers of birds entered by each nation were as follows: Austria 289, Belgium 5694, France 1764, Germany 1697, Great Britain 117, Greece 72, Holland 2521, Hungary 43, Italy 2290, Malta 48, Portugal 721, Spain 2428, Slovenia 11, Switzerland 287, Czech Republic 77, Denmark 43, Ireland 25, Luxemburg 18, Ireland 8, Slovakia 21, making a total of 17.850 birds from 20 Nations.
The partition of the medals almost represents the number of birds entered by the nations and was as follows:
Belgium 618, Holland 237, Italy 193,France 120, Germany 120, Spain 102, Portugal 35, Czech Rep. 31, Switzerland 18, Austria 13, Hungary 5, Great Britain 1, Slovakia 1, Malta 1, Slovenia1.

Well done Great Britain, this is the way forward and with the quality we have there is no reason why we should not bring home a lot more medals in the future. We will need our top breeders to abandon the taboo of close ringing, and ring at least some of their birds with lOA or affiliated societies rings.

The Association presented all participating members at this world show with a certificate to commemorate their taking part in this prestigious event.

The lOA looks forward to taking many more birds to participate in the next World Show.
